The 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly UNGA, commences in New York with several Heads of state, envoys and diplomatic coys on ground to deliberate salient global issues.
It is expected that such a high profile summit demands countries number one citizens to lead as the tradition has been.
However, Nigeria has in the past, made impressive appearances with the country heads on the lead. But in a recent time the current administration in the country has delegated such responsibilities to the vice president.
This has however, elicited public concern with popular opinions pointing to the President’s absence in such high profile event. But whatever your gave is, the Vice President, Shettima is on ground with some administrative retinue to fill the gap.
Meanwhile, VP Shettima who arrived New York Sunday night was enthusiastic and said:
“Last night, I arrived in New York to represent my boss and lead our country’s delegation to the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly, UNGA.
“No doubt, Nigeria’s engagements at the global gathering will be guided by our country’s national interest, commitment to multilateralism and President Tinubu’s consistent advocacy for reforms of global institutions to reflect contemporary economic and demographic realities.
“Our message in New York is clear: Nigeria believes in multilateralism, but the institutions that govern our world must become more representative, equitable and responsive to the realities of today.”
VP Shettima has been busy in the recent time assuming all important responsibilities, representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in several global engagements.
Recall he was at the 2026 BRICS session in New Delhi, India where his presence made a difference, delivered a high note speech to the assembly, announcing Nigeria’s stand on joining BRICS membership.
