Nigeria has commenced local production of next-generation dual-active ingredient insecticide-treated mosquito nets, with Health Textiles Nigeria FZE producing nets designed to address the growing challenge of insecticide resistance.
The development also forms part of efforts to expand domestic production of essential health products and strengthen Nigeria’s healthcare value chain.
The development comes as malaria continues to impose a heavy burden on Nigeria and other countries in Africa.
Meanwhile, World Health Organisation (WHO) estimated that malaria caused 282 million cases and 610,000 deaths globally in 2024, with the African Region accounting for the majority of cases and deaths.
The introduction of dual-active-ingredient nets is expected to strengthen malaria prevention efforts, particularly as resistance to commonly used insecticides continues to pose a challenge.
The new project was disclosed by the Nigerian Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, in Abuja, saying the development would contribute to the Federal Government’s efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s healthcare value chain.
The National Coordinator of the Presidential Initiative for Unlocking the Healthcare Value Chain, PVAC, Dr Abdu Mukhtar, also mentioned that the project demonstrated how government policies and private investment could translate into skills development and local manufacturing.
